What is a High Volume Injection ?

A High-Volume Injection is a treatment used for chronic tendon pain, particularly around the Achilles tendon, knee (patellar tendon), and sometimes the plantar fascia. It involves injecting a larger-than-usual volume of sterile fluid, usually a mix of saline (salt water), local anaesthetic, and sometimes a small amount of cortisone around the affected tendon.

This technique helps separate the tendon from surrounding irritated tissues, reducing pain by calming down nerves and blood vessels that may be contributing to the problem.

“Max is a highly trained, responsive, competent, communicative, and caring practitioner and person. He has successfully treated me for the management of knee pain and other arthritic conditions over the last 5-6 years enabling me to live a physically active life. I really cannot recommend Max highly enough.”

What our patients say

Do I need a High Volume Injection ?

You might benefit from a High-Volume Injection if:

  • You’ve had ongoing tendon pain for several months (like Achilles or patellar tendinopathy).

  • You’ve tried other treatments such as rest, physiotherapy, or shockwave therapy with limited success.

  • Your ultrasound scan shows signs of neovascularisation (new blood vessels and nerves growing into the painful area), which is often associated with chronic tendon pain.

Our team will carefully assess your condition and history to determine if this is the right treatment for you.

How much High Volume Injections cost?

Our Ultrasound Guided High Volume Injection procedure start from £300 including initial telephone consultation, diagnostic ultrasound, written report with care plan and exercise prescription if appropriate.

How are High Volume Injections performed ?

The procedure is quick, image-guided, and precise:

  • You'll be lying comfortably on the front or on the side while the clinician uses ultrasound guidance to identify the exact area around the painful tendon.

  • A fine needle is used to numb the region and then to inject the high-volume fluid safely and accurately.

  • The injection usually takes only a few minutes, and you’ll be able to walk out of the clinic shortly afterward.

  • A tailored rehab plan (usually involving specific exercises) is often recommended after the procedure for the best results.
